Unless otherwise announced, all food in Troop 165 is provided for the Scouts by their Patrol. The Patrol plans the meals, collects the required money, buys the food, transports it to the campsite, prepares it, and eats it family-style as a Patrol.
Meals are planned on or before the second Tuesday before the anticipated weekend trip. The Senior Patrol Leader and the Scoutmaster or the Campmaster must approve the meals, and they should follow guidelines in the Scout Handbook and Field Book. Such foods as hot dogs and sodas are prohibited. (i.e. the emphasis is on preparation and cooking, not opening boxes.)
Private caches are prohibited. There is no need to provide "a little extra" for your son. The Patrol will provide all he needs. (Scouts with dietary restrictions will be accommodated. See the Scoutmaster.) If a special snack is desired, then the Patrol should plan to have it for everybody.
Scouts do all the cooking for Scouts. Adults do all the cooking for adults. All adults camping with the Troop are expected to plan, pay for, shop for, and prepare their meals as a unit (known as the Moose Patrol) just like the Scouts do.
Meals should be paid for before the weekend camping trip. Generally meals cost $10-15 for the weekend. Because these meals are planned and prepared by the Patrol as a unit, it is very important to have concrete commitments (and cash in advance) for each outing.
When we have the luxury, the Patrols cook out of Troop-owned chuck boxes, which are complete kitchens, containing all the equipment for feeding the Patrol. The following items, however, must be provided by the Scout: plate, knife/fork/spoon, and cup.
